Type 2 Diabetes Diet
Type 2 diabetes is actually quite common these days. A lot of cases also have something in common, and this is the fact that it is difficult to develop a healthy type 2 diabetes diet that can be perceived as normal, so to speak. By definition, normal here pertains to something that is familiar, and not too exotic to the taste.
If you are one of the many people afflicted with type 2 diabetes, then one of the first things your physician will recommend is a change of diet. You have to understand the fact that whatever food you consume will have certain effects on your very condition. Thus, you have to be very, very careful with all the food that you take in unless you want to develop the common complications that come with the condition. Balance is the key to implement here. You have to maintain balance in every little thing you do, such as your weight range, your physical activity, your blood sugar levels, and your very diet.
You surely must have heard about the food pyramid by now. With diabetes, there is also what we call the diabetes food pyramid. This pyramid is subdivided into 6 portions. Let us discuss these different portions in descending order; meaning, we start with the smallest portion and end with the biggest one.
The smallest portion is actually composed of fats, alcohol, and sweets. Since these food items are placed inside the smallest portion of the pyramid, then this should be an indication that only small servings of these should be consumed. It is actually recommended to reserve these food items for special occasions. This is because huge consumption of these will surely have adverse effects on your condition.
The next portion should comprise of your meat and your meat substitutes. Meat here should be lean, so you should stay away from red meat. As for your meat substitutes, tofu would make an excellent choice here. The recommended daily serving for this portion is 4 to 6 ounces.
The fourth to the largest portion would include milk. Now, you may think that the ideal time for you to drink milk is in the morning. This is indeed true; however, you should not limit yourself to just mornings. In fact, it is actually recommended to take in 2 to 3 servings of milk daily. Thus, you should incorporate milk during lunch and dinner as well. The next portion includes fruits. Prepare 2 to 4 servings of fruits daily and distribute them accordingly. For proper distribution and selection of these fruits, do not hesitate to consult your dietician.
The second to the largest portion should be composed of 3 to 5 servings of your favorite leafy greens. Whether cooked or fresh, veggies should definitely be included. The largest portion would still include 3 to 5 servings of veggies, only starchy this time, as well as 6 to 11 servings of grains. All of these should be included in a type 2 diabetes diet.
