Childhood Diabetes Planning
Diabetes is dubbed as one of the leading causes of death all over America right now. The sad thing about the condition is that not too many diabetics are aware that they are already suffering from the condition until it is too late. What is even sadder is that even children can be afflicted with the condition.
When you are dealing with childhood diabetes, it is a must for you to cater to the physiological and emotional impact that the condition would have on your child. This means that the necessary changes should be implemented, particularly when it comes to activities that take place in the school setting. It is way easier to deal with activities that take place in the home front. But when it comes to activities that take place in school, then the situation here can be different and more difficult.
First and foremost, you have to be forthright with your child’s teachers and school officials. Inform them right off the bat that your juvenile child is diabetic, and provide them the necessary information that they need. This way, the teachers and the officials can prepare a plan of their own, should any sort of emergency arise.
Secondly, you should educate yourself about the condition as much as possible. This way, you yourself can pass this information to your child’s teachers and school officials. These people just might not have any idea what to expect from a diabetic child. Thus, you should lay out for them just what to expect. For instance, let them know that it is inevitable for your child to behave quite unusually at times. This is doe to the fact that there is imbalance in the blood sugar levels of your child. There may be anger outbursts that occur occasionally, and there may also be times when your child would be confused with matters that are otherwise regarded as simple by other children.
Thirdly, you should also prepare your child’s teachers and school officials the proper way of administering insulin shots. Insulin shots can indeed be administered by the patient on his own. But you have to remember that the patient here is your kid, and that being a kid, he is prone to a little bit of forgetfulness at times. Thus, these people should be taught how the insulin shots are given. This way, all bases can be covered accordingly.
Lastly, when dealing with juvenile diabetes you also have to educate your own child as to the determination of early signs of what is known as a diabetic crisis or episode. The common symptoms include being shaky, sweating, fatigue or tiredness, and that feeling of having butterflies in the stomach.
